Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such treatments must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
